Tiempo Detenido
On September 11th, 1973, a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet unfolded in Chile, marking the beginning of a dark chapter in the country's history. This period of dictatorship, lasting until 1990, was characterized by intense political repression, egregious human rights abuses, and widespread violence against perceived dissidents. Over 28.000 people were tortured, while other 3227 were either murdered or dissapeared. The regime's impact on Chilean society continues to be felt, shaping the collective memory and leaving indelible scars on those who lived through its tumultuous reign.
In this piece, each ball is a symbolic representation of people affected during the Chilean dictatorship. A ball turning black signifies a victim of torture. If a ball comes to a stop, it represents a life lost to murder. Lastly, some balls simply disappear, representing those who were never found.
